Witchcraft and Wizardry - Online Exhibition

'What use are torches, light or eyeglasses, if people will not see’. Heinrich Khunrath, Amphitheatrum Sapientiae. (Khunrath, 1609)

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David differ somewhat in their respective approaches to the study of magic. Whereas Hogwarts provides an excellent, if at times hazardous, training in applied wizardry, the University of Wales Trinity Saint David offers the opportunity to develop a theoretical understanding of the intellectual and cultural history of magic.

This exhibition shows a small selection of books relevant to the study of Witchcraft and Wizardry that are kept in the historic collections at the Roderic Bowen Library and Archives, and that are available for consultation to all students at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

BICENTENARY OF NEUDDLWYD ACADEMY

The academy at Neuaddlwyd was opened in October 1810 as a result of the deliberations of the ministers of the Independent chapels in Cardiganshire. They needed a place to train young men from poorer backgrounds and prepare them for the ministry.

2010 will mark the bicentenary of the establishment of the academy which at the time was famous in Wales and well known throughout Britain, indeed its fame had reached America and its founder, Thomas Phillips, was awarded an Hon. Doctorate in Divinity by what is now Princetown University in 1831. It was significant in the ecclesiatic and educational history of Wales in the early 19th century and it is appropriate that its foundation should be celebrated. A celebration is being held in Aberaeron and Neuaddlwyd on 15-16 October.

Now online.. hell of the prison hulks

The lives of 200,000 inmates held in horrific conditions on nineteenth-century prison ships were highlighted yesterday as the records were made available online.

The ships housed inmates aged eight to 84, according to the Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849.

William Davies, 84, got seven years for sheep stealing while Samuel Phillips, 16, got life for burglary

Each hulk held 200 to 300 convicts, with one in three dying on board.

Dan Jones, of Ancestry.co. uk, said: "The records provide a fascinating insight."

Britain's last floating jail, holding prisoners off Portland, Dorset, was sold in 2005.

Earlier this year David Cameron suggested reintroducing prison ships as quick and "cost effective"

Take Five, Read for Ten

Ten minutes of quality reading time with a child every day can make a real difference to children’s literacy levels was the message from Education Minister Leighton Andrews at the National Eisteddfod.

Speaking at the launch of the Welsh Assembly Government’s new literacy campaign, Take Five, Read for Ten, the Minister said:

“I want children to develop a love of reading. This new campaign encourages adults to take time out of their hectic lifestyles to spend ten minutes each day reading with a child."

The campaign forms a key part of the Assembly Government’s National Literacy Plan which will be launched in the autumn.

A leaflet on Take Five, Read for Ten is being made available throughout the summer to leisure centres across Wales and will be available to all primary schools in the autumn.

The leaflet contains some top tips on how to support children in their reading which include:

  • Read with your child every night.
  • Join a local library for free. You'll be amazed at what's on offer – story telling, fun events and books are free to borrow.
  • Follow the words with your finger as you read. Miss out words to check they are following and make them say it.
  • Visit your nearest bookshop or car boot sales for bargain books.
  • Reading isn’t just about books. It’s about football programmes, comics, recipes, rugby magazines, e-mails, computer games, text messages, digital story telling – they all have elements of reading

Britain's only Prime Ministerial Library

St Deiniol's Library has been recognised as the most important research library and collection in Wales after the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. The Library boasts an outstanding collection of more than 250,000 books, journals and pamphlets on a wide range of subjects but specialising in our core subject areas of Theology and Victorian Studies. This unique collection is kept up-to-date with the latest publications which readers can browse on the open shelves.

The heart of the Library is Gladstone’s own collection of over 32,000 items. Many of his books contain his annotations, some of which are extremely detailed. In addition to his books, the Library houses most of Gladstone’s non-political correspondence, speeches and papers which are administered by the Flintshire Record Office.

St. Deiniol's Libray was founded by William Ewart Gladstone, arguably Britains' greatest Prime Minister, in 1894. It is the only Prime Miniterial Library in the UK and is unique in being a residential library with facilities for overnight stays or retreats for some personal study time.

Center for Jewish History

The Center for Jewish History in New York City is now on Flickr via The Commons! They are home to five major institutions of scholarship, history, and art: The American Sephardi Federation, the American Jewish Historical Society, the Leo Baeck Institute, the Yeshiva University Museum and the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.

Their collections constitute one of the most important resources for the documentation and exploration of the Jewish experience. Their Flickr photostream contains rich gems in sets on Jewish Rites and Customs, Everyday Life, Ceremonial Objects and Synagogues.

Andrea Buchner, Director of the Gruss Lipper Digital Laboratory at the CJH, provides insight into their Flickr photostream:

While the main goal was always to increase the accessibility of our collections, we were particularly intrigued by the fact that Flickr allowed us to solicit user feedback. We selected images featuring people and circumstances of which we knew little in the hope that users would leave comments and notes that would shed more light on these images. We had some wonderful results with the great-granddaughter of a person in an image contacting us and another person telling us what happened to orphans depicted in some images.

Eich Awgrymiadau

English version

Diolch i bawb am eich awgrymiadau. Y mis yma rydym ni’n canolbwyntio ar rai o’r awgrymiadau rydym ni wedi’u derbyn ar gyfer y Llyfrgell:

Mwy o gyfrifiaduron”: Rydym ni bob amser yn ystyried ffyrdd o wella’n darpariaeth o ran cyfrifiaduron, ac ym mis Ionawr 2010 agorwyd Y Cwad gyda 7 cyfrifiadur newydd sbon. Hefyd rydym ni wedi archebu 2 iMac i’r Cwad a byddan nhw’n cyrraedd cyn hir. Oherwydd diffyg lle a chynnydd yn y galw am gyfrifiaduron cludadwy, ar hyn o bryd rydym ni’n ystyried prynu gliniaduron newydd i’r CAD.

Cyfnodau benthyca hirach”: Pan fo’n bosibl rydym ni’n ceisio adolygu cyfnodau benthyca teitlau unigol yn unol â’r galw. Rydym ni newydd wneud adolygiad o’r teitlau band glas yn y Llyfrgell ac wedi rhoi rhai o’r rhain ar gael ar gyfer y cyfnod benthyca safonol o 2 neu 4 wythnos. Cofiwch fod angen inni gydbwyso'ch ceisiadau am fenthyciadau hirach â'r rheini gan gwsmeriaid sy'n teimlo nad oes gennym ddigon o lyfrau ar hyn o bryd! Yn ddiweddar rydym ni wedi cyflwyno polisi e-lyfrau er mwyn sicrhau bod unrhyw deitlau newydd yn cael eu prynu fel e-lyfrau pan fo hynny’n bosibl, er mwyn cynyddu mynediad i’r teitlau hynny a sicrhau eu bod ar gael ar bob adeg.

Lleihau’r dirwyon”: Dim ond ar eitemau sy'n cael eu dychwelyd yn hwyr y byddwn ni'n codi dirwyon, felly os gwnewch chi adnewyddu neu ddychwelyd eich holl adnoddau ar amser ni fydd gofyn ichi dalu ceiniog inni! Rydym ni’n codi dirwyon er mwyn annog cwsmeriaid i ddychwelyd adnoddau ar amser a gallu’u rhoi ar gael i bobl eraill. Mae llawer o ffyrdd y gallwch chi adnewyddu’ch benthyciadau gan osgoi dirwyon – ar-lein yn http://hip.drindod.ac.uk, yn bersonol yn y Llyfrgell, neu trwy ffonio 01267 676780.

Dau ddilyniant gwahanol ar y silff i lyfrau mawr Cymraeg a Saesneg”: Rydym ni wedi ystyried yr awgrym hwn yn ofalus ac ar hyn o bryd rydym ni’n teimlo na fyddai’n briodol. Un rheswm am hyn yw bod cynifer o deitlau dwyieithog na fyddai’n gweddu i drefniant tebyg yn dda iawn. Hefyd mae’r trefniant cyfredol yn helpu cwsmeriaid sy’n chwilio am ddeunydd yn y naill iaith neu’r llall yn ôl y pwnc, ac mae’n rhoi amlygrwydd cyfartal i’r Gymraeg a’r Saesneg.

Papur am ddim”: Rydym ni eisoes yn darparu papur am ddim ichi argraffu a llungopïo.

Your Suggestions

Fersiwn Cymraeg

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. This month we are focussing on some of the suggestions we have received for the Library:

"More computers": We are always looking at ways to increase our provision of computers, and in January 2010 we opened Y Cwad with 7 brand new PCs. In addition, we have ordered 2 iMacs for Y Cwad which will arrive shortly. Due to space contraints and the increase in demand for portable computers, we are currently looking at purchasing new laptops for the LRC.

"Longer loan periods": Where possible we try and review the loan periods on individual titles according to demand. We have just completed a review of blue band titles within the Library and have made some of these available for the standard 2 or 4 week loan period. Please do bear in mind that we have to balance your requests for longer loans with those from customers who feel we do not currently have enough books! We have recently introduced an e-books policy to ensure that any new titles are purchased as e-books where possible to increase access to these titles and make them available 24/7.

"Reduce the fines": We only charge fines on items that are returned late, so if you return or renew all your resources on time you will never need to pay us a penny! The reason we charge fines is to encourage customers to return resources on time, so that they can be made available to others. There are plenty of ways to renew your loans and avoid a fine - online at http://hip.trinity-cm.ac.uk, in person at the Library, or by phone to 01267 676780.

"A separate shelving sequence for Welsh and English Big books": We have considered this suggestion carefully and currently feel it would be unsuitable. One reason is because of the number of bilingual titles, which would not fit well into to such an arrangement. The current sequence also helps customers who are looking for material in either language according to subject, and gives equal prominence to both Welsh and English.

"Free paper": We already provide free paper for your printing and photocopying.

Extra! Extra! One million pages added to online newspaper resource

Freely accessible to UK colleges and universities, the latest addition of one million pages takes the total number of pages of 19th century newspapers available online to over three million.

Alastair Dunning, programme manager at JISC, says: "In a time when print newspapers are under threat, the British Library resource provides a fascinating portrait of the vitality of the media industry in the nineteenth century. The website shows not only the diversity of political opinion during the age, but the geographical spread of newspapers, reflecting ideas and beliefs from all parts of the country.”

22 new titles cover a range of both regional and metropolitan publications including the Cheshire Observer, the Royal Cornwall Gazette, the Isle of Man Times and the Nottinghamshire Guardian.

The British Library’s 19th Century Newspapers project, developed in partnership with JISC and Gale, part of Cengage Learning, offers researchers greatly enhanced access to a vast archive of socially, culturally and historically important collections previously only available in the British Library’s London-based reading rooms.
