Scotland's oldest book on display

The oldest book in Scotland is going on public display for the first time in its history.

The Celtic Psalter dates from the 11th Century and contains hand-written psalms in Latin, with Celtic and Pictish illustrations.

It has been kept under lock and key at the University of Edinburgh and has been available to only a few scholars.

But for the next three months the public will have the chance to view the book at the university's newly refurbished library.

Also on display is the finest surviving copy of Scotland's first substantial printed book, the Aberdeen Breviary which dates back to 1509.

There is also a copy of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet published during the playwright's lifetime.

The exhibition opens on Friday and lasts until 14th March.

The Cambrian Index Online

The Cambrian Index

In 1804 the first weekly newspaper appeared in Wales when The Cambrian was published in Swansea.

Swansea was an ideal centre for such a venture. It was developing into a busy commercial and industrial town with sea and land communication facilities for distributing the newspaper. The Cambrian circulation was restricted to the small minority in the principal towns of south Wales who were able to read English. The venture proved successful and was soon followed by other weeklies such as The North Wales gazette, established in Bangor in 1808, and The Carmarthen journal, established in Carmarthen in 1810.

Swansea Library Service is proud to announce that a computerised index to the contents of a large number of the newspaper's issues is now freely available.

New online tool will help connect history

The ‘Connected Histories’ project, which is a partnership between the Universities of Sheffield and Hertfordshire, the Institute of Historical Research, and King’s College London, will create an innovative search engine for a wide range of electronic resources relating to early modern and nineteenth century British history.

This period of British history has one of the largest collections of digital sources available on the web, including not only digitised books, but also newspapers, manuscripts, genealogical records, and even maps and images. These sources, created by both academic and commercial organisations, are accessed by hundreds of thousands of individuals every day, across the world. Until now, there has been no single starting place to search through these sources.

The website will be fully launched in 2011.

Find out more about the Project @ http://www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/programmes/digitisation/econtent/connectedhistories.aspx

Artist's gift of veteran drawings

A Welsh artist who painted two of Britain's World War I veterans shortly before their deaths has gifted final drawings of the pair to the nation.

Dan Llywelyn Hall, 29, originally from Cardiff, painted Henry Allingham, who was then the world's oldest man just a few days before he passed away.

His portrait of Britain's last Tommy, Harry Patch, 111, was completed by the artist months earlier.

The preparatory drawings made during sittings with the veterans have been gifted to the Royal Collection and the National Museum Wales to preserve them for future generations.

Google Translate

There are at least two new reasons for Welsh speakers and learners to be cheerful which have emerged over the last few weeks…..

Firstly, Google has just added Welsh to the list of language on its translate service. This is a real boost to those of us who need to work bilingually on the web, either to track developments, or to improve fluency in a second language.

http://translate.google.com/#

Meanwhile, the Language Technologies Unit at Bangor University, has released free online version of Cysill their spelling and grammar checker for the Welsh language. This is another really useful tool, which has been making homework so much easier to Welsh learners for several years. Now it is available to all of us, which is great.

Teaching Resources Centre resources

We're currently in the process of redeveloping the Teaching Resources Centre (TRC) into an exciting new social learning space, which is due to open later this autumn.

In order to make sure the most popular resources held in the TRC are still accessible to everyone, many have now moved to the Library. You can now find the Teaching Practice Collection in the new purpose-built movable shelving to the rear of the Library. The Big Books are also now located in the Library, opposite the movable shelving under the stairs.

The Education Collection has been moved to the Library and is in the process of being integrated with our Main Collection. All these resources and their current locations are listed on HIP, the LRC catalogue.

We hope that you will enjoy using the new space when it opens and please do accept our apologies for any inconvience caused while we are in the process of relocating our resources.
