Largest book in the world goes on show for the first time

Klencke Atlas, which is 350 years old, will be displayed as part of British Library exhibition on maps.

It takes six people to lift it and has been recorded as the largest book in the world, yet the splendid Klencke Atlas, presented to Charles II on his restoration and now 350 years old, has never been publicly displayed with its pages open. That glaring omission is to be rectified, it was announced by the British Library today, when it will be displayed as one of the stars of its big summer exhibition about maps.

The summer show will feature about 100 maps, considered some of the greatest in the world, with three-quarters of them going on display for the first time.

Does texting improve pupils spelling?

Recent research carried out by The University of Coventry suggests that regular texting can help with children's spelling. The research suggests that pupils who regularly use text messaging also appear to be developing skills in the more formal use of English. Dr Clare Wood, reader in Developmental Psychology said that the use of text language "was actually driving the development of phonological awareness and reading skill in children." The full report will be published next year.

Unequal Britain?

A new report published today, "An Anatomy of Economic Inequality in the UK" has revealed the gap between rich and poor still hasn't been addressed. It offers a snapshot of a divided nation where the richest 10% of the population are more than 100 times as wealthy as the poorest 10% of society.

Say Cheese! Portraits of the Welsh

1 February - 9 April 2010

The National Library of Wales’ collection contains over 200,000 portraits spanning centuries of history, art, biography and fame. At its heart are portraits relating to Wales and the other Celtic nations. The collection is impressive in its variety, ranging from the native Welsh artistic tradition of William Roos and Hugh Hughes; a selection of self-portraits and the works of some of the modern master portrait painters such as Sir Kyffin Williams, Will Roberts and David Griffiths, all of whom have kept alive the tradition of portraiture in Wales.

This exhibition displays portraits of notable men and women who have made a significant contribution to life in Wales. It features includes framed works of art, portrait busts and photographs, under various themes, such as music, entertainment, sport, religion, politics, and the arts. This is by no means a definitive list of the famous faces of Wales, and aims only to highlight the richness and variety of the Library’s collection.

Since receiving funding from the Foyle Foundation and the Garfield Weston Foundation, steps have been taken to digitise part of the portrait archive. As a result, items will be available to view on the National Library website from March 2010.

Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is commemorated internationally on 27th January each year. This date was chosen as it is the anniversary of the day in 1945 on which the Soviet Army liberated the largest Nazi concentration camp – Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Each year, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust urges everyone in the UK to pause and reflect on what can happen when racism, prejudice and exclusionary behaviour are left unchecked. On HMD take the time to see how the lessons of the past can play a part in our communities today.

Each HMD has an annual theme which provides a focus for HMD activities. The theme for HMD 2010 is The Legacy of Hope.
