Diolch i bawb am eich awgrymiadau. Y mis yma rydym ni’n canolbwyntio ar rai o’r awgrymiadau rydym ni wedi’u derbyn ar gyfer y Llyfrgell:

“Mwy o gyfrifiaduron”: Rydym ni bob amser yn ystyried ffyrdd o wella’n darpariaeth o ran cyfrifiaduron, ac ym mis Ionawr 2010 agorwyd Y Cwad gyda 7 cyfrifiadur newydd sbon. Hefyd rydym ni wedi archebu 2 iMac i’r Cwad a byddan nhw’n cyrraedd cyn hir. Oherwydd diffyg lle a chynnydd yn y galw am gyfrifiaduron cludadwy, ar hyn o bryd rydym ni’n ystyried prynu gliniaduron newydd i’r CAD.

“Cyfnodau benthyca hirach”: Pan fo’n bosibl rydym ni’n ceisio adolygu cyfnodau benthyca teitlau unigol yn unol â’r galw. Rydym ni newydd wneud adolygiad o’r teitlau band glas yn y Llyfrgell ac wedi rhoi rhai o’r rhain ar gael ar gyfer y cyfnod benthyca safonol o 2 neu 4 wythnos. Cofiwch fod angen inni gydbwyso'ch ceisiadau am fenthyciadau hirach â'r rheini gan gwsmeriaid sy'n teimlo nad oes gennym ddigon o lyfrau ar hyn o bryd! Yn ddiweddar rydym ni wedi cyflwyno polisi e-lyfrau er mwyn sicrhau bod unrhyw deitlau newydd yn cael eu prynu fel e-lyfrau pan fo hynny’n bosibl, er mwyn cynyddu mynediad i’r teitlau hynny a sicrhau eu bod ar gael ar bob adeg.

“Lleihau’r dirwyon”: Dim ond ar eitemau sy'n cael eu dychwelyd yn hwyr y byddwn ni'n codi dirwyon, felly os gwnewch chi adnewyddu neu ddychwelyd eich holl adnoddau ar amser ni fydd gofyn ichi dalu ceiniog inni! Rydym ni’n codi dirwyon er mwyn annog cwsmeriaid i ddychwelyd adnoddau ar amser a gallu’u rhoi ar gael i bobl eraill. Un rheswm am hyn yw bod cynifer o deitlau dwyieithog na fyddai’n gweddu i drefniant tebyg yn dda iawn. Hefyd mae’r trefniant cyfredol yn helpu cwsmeriaid sy’n chwilio am ddeunydd yn y naill iaith neu’r llall yn ôl y pwnc, ac mae’n rhoi amlygrwydd cyfartal i’r Gymraeg a’r Saesneg.

Your Suggestions

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. This month we are focussing on some of the suggestions we have received for the Library:

"More computers": We are always looking at ways to increase our provision of computers, and in January 2010 we opened Y Cwad with 7 brand new PCs. In addition, we have ordered 2 iMacs for Y Cwad which will arrive shortly. Due to space contraints and the increase in demand for portable computers, we are currently looking at purchasing new laptops for the LRC.

"Longer loan periods": Where possible we try and review the loan periods on individual titles according to demand. We have just completed a review of blue band titles within the Library and have made some of these available for the standard 2 or 4 week loan period. Please do bear in mind that we have to balance your requests for longer loans with those from customers who feel we do not currently have enough books! We have recently introduced an e-books policy to ensure that any new titles are purchased as e-books where possible to increase access to these titles and make them available 24/7.

"Reduce the fines": We only charge fines on items that are returned late, so if you return or renew all your resources on time you will never need to pay us a penny! The reason we charge fines is to encourage customers to return resources on time, so that they can be made available to others. There are plenty of ways to renew your loans and avoid a fine - online at http://hip.trinity-cm.ac.uk, in person at the Library, or by phone to 01267 676780.

"A separate shelving sequence for Welsh and English Big books": We have considered this suggestion carefully and currently feel it would be unsuitable. One reason is because of the number of bilingual titles, which would not fit well into to such an arrangement. The current sequence also helps customers who are looking for material in either language according to subject, and gives equal prominence to both Welsh and English.

"Free paper": We already provide free paper for your printing and photocopying.

Extra! Extra! One million pages added to online newspaper resource

Freely accessible to UK colleges and universities, the latest addition of one million pages takes the total number of pages of 19th century newspapers available online to over three million.

Alastair Dunning, programme manager at JISC, says: "In a time when print newspapers are under threat, the British Library resource provides a fascinating portrait of the vitality of the media industry in the nineteenth century. The website shows not only the diversity of political opinion during the age, but the geographical spread of newspapers, reflecting ideas and beliefs from all parts of the country.”

22 new titles cover a range of both regional and metropolitan publications including the Cheshire Observer, the Royal Cornwall Gazette, the Isle of Man Times and the Nottinghamshire Guardian.

The British Library’s 19th Century Newspapers project, developed in partnership with JISC and Gale, part of Cengage Learning, offers researchers greatly enhanced access to a vast archive of socially, culturally and historically important collections previously only available in the British Library’s London-based reading rooms.

Philip Jones Griffiths retrospective exhibition

Griffiths is best known for his wartime photography, particularly his 1971 book 'Vietnam Inc', which is widely held to have been influential in helping to turn public opinion against the war. However he developed his skills through his social and documentary photography of Britain in the 1950s and 1960s. All aspects of his work were present in 'Recollections', the first retrospective of Griffiths' British photographs since his death in March 2008.

Born in Rhuddlan, Wales, in 1936 Philip Jones Griffiths studied pharmacy in Liverpool before taking up a career as a freelance photojournalist. During his incredible career his assignments, often self-engineered, took him to over 120 countries and his photographs appeared in every major magazine in the world. An associate member of Magnum from 1966, he became a member in 1971, then in 1980 moved to New York to assume the presidency of the organisation, a post he held for a record five years.

"Philip Jones Griffiths was one of the greatest and most influential photographers of the late twentieth century. Anyone who had the privilege to know him encountered a lively and enquiring mind with a strong - indeed driving - sense of justice. This was coupled with a quick and wicked sense of humour, which is evident in many of his photographs in this exhibition, with their irreverence towards authority, both political and cultural."

Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru / The National Library of Wales

Bydd y digwyddiad o ddiddordeb i staff academaidd a staff cymorth, ymchwilwyr a myfyrwyr – yn wir i bawb sydd â diddordeb yn hanes diwylliannol a chymdeithasol y genedl.

The National Library of Wales is visiting Trinity University College on Monday 22nd March for a Roadshow Event to be held in Group 1 in Y Cwad from 11.30 am til 3 pm. The event is of interest to academic and support staff, researchers and students - indeed anyone who has an interest in the cultural and social history of our nation.

Themes covered include:

1. How to join the Library
2. How to use the catalogues and request/reserve items
3. Our electronic and digitised resources, and how to access them
4. Other services available e.g. wifi, reprographics unit, enquiries unit
5. Future developments

International Women's Day 2010

International Women's Day (8 March) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, IWD is a national holiday. The first IWD was run in 1911. Next year is IWD Global Centenary 1911-2011

Thousands of Cardiff's rare books are saved

Thousands of Wales' oldest and rarest books has been saved after a council threatened to sell them.

The 14,000 items, some dating from the late 15th Century, are to be moved to Cardiff University's library.

About 175 books from the collection were printed before 1500 and it also includes 500 Bibles and a rare set of early Shakespeare volumes.

Cardiff council proposed selling the books, but this prompted calls by academics to halt the sale.

The university, Welsh Assembly Government and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales have donated £1.2m towards the transfer of the books.

The collection is described as being of "enormous historical and academic value".

'Extremely rare'

Some of the items are "almost certainly" not held in any other library collection in the world, and further books were only held in one other library.

But it is said the real value lies in the groupings of works. A major set of 17th Century editions of Shakespeare is "extremely rare".

Welsh Heritage Minster, Alun Ffred Jones said: "I am very pleased to support the co-operation between Cardiff council and Cardiff University to ensure that this important collection of rare books will remain in Cardiff and be made available by the university to the people of Wales and Cardiff.

"I am also delighted by the university's plans to raise the profile of the collection by digitising and making books from the collection available online.

"This will ensure that even more people from Wales and the rest of the world are able to access free of charge information from one of Wales' important cultural assets."

Cardiff council's executive member for sport leisure and culture, Nigel Howells said it was the best solution for the city.

Cardiff University's Pro vice-chancellor, Professor Jonathan Osmond said: "Finding a permanent home for this collection will help enrich the cultural life of Wales and Cardiff. Cardiff University is delighted to have helped secure its future."

Once conservation work has been carried out on the collection, members of the public will be able to view it.

In time they will also be able to view digitised versions of some of the most interesting works on the internet.

The books were due to be sold through public auction in London, but leading academics and members of the public raised concerns about the collection leaving the city.

Michael Foot 1913 - 2010

The Michael Foot Papers are held at the Labour History Archive and Study Centre in The People's History Museum in Manchester. The papers start in 1926 with a copy of his school report. The collection covers Foot's long political career until 1991. For further information go to The Archives Hub.

In 1935 Foot unsuccessfully stood for Monmouth, ten years later he became the Labour MP for Davenport, losing the seat in 1955. Foot was a devout Bevanite, supporting Nye Bevan in his 1950s battles against Gaitskill. Like Bevan, Foot was a skilled orator firmly attached to left-wing causes such as unilateralism. When Bevan died in 1960 Foot inherited his seat at Ebbw Vale (the seat was renamed Blaenau Gwent in 1983). Foot held this seat until 1992.

"A clock in Y Cwad": good idea - we will certainly be getting a clock for Y Cwad!

"Some pictures on the wall": it has always been our intention to have artwork on the wall of Y Cwad, and we hope to have some in place shortly.

"Later hours at the evening and weekend": Y Cwad is open until 9pm Monday to Thursday, and we are currently running a survey about our opening hours which you can participate in here.

"More seating in Y Cwad": we have some more chairs on order which are due to arrive this week.

"More bins dotted around the place": there are already three recycling points in Y Cwad and we are monitoring the situation.

"Blinds for the windows": we don't currently have any plans to introduce blinds as we hope to make the most of the traditional appearance of this historic building.

"Skatepark": unfortunately we have no current plans to introduce a skate park!

Say Cheese! Portraits of the Welsh

The National Library of Wales’ collection contains over 200,000 portraits spanning centuries of history, art, biography and fame. At its heart are portraits relating to Wales and the other Celtic nations. Portraits come in many forms - paintings, photographs, sculptures, engravings, drawings and various other media of artistic representations of a person, in which the face and expression are of primary importance.

The collection is impressive in its variety, ranging from the native Welsh artistic tradition of William Roos and Hugh Hughes; a selection of self-portraits and the works of some of the modern master portrait painters such as Sir Kyffin Williams, Will Roberts and David Griffiths, all of whom have kept alive the tradition of portraiture in Wales.

This exhibition displays portraits of notable men and women who have made a significant contribution to life in Wales.

This exhibition features includes framed works of art, portrait busts and photographs, under various themes, such as music, entertainment, sport, religion, politics, and the arts. This is by no means a definitive list of the famous faces of Wales, and aims only to highlight the richness and variety of the Library’s collection.

Since receiving funding from the Foyle Foundation and the Garfield Weston Foundation, steps have been taken to digitise part of the portrait archive. As a result, items will be available to view on our website from March 2010.
