Wills & Probate Records Digititised

Wills, which were proved in the Welsh ecclesiastical courts before the introduction of Civil Probate on 11 January 1858, have been deposited in the National Library of Wales. The old indexes produced by the courts themselves have now been replaced by a new online index.

Free access is now available to digital images of the wills. At the moment no digital images are available for Hawarden, Brecon or St Asaph pre 1660.

The covering dates of the surviving probate records are:

Bangor: 1635 - 1858
Brecon: 1543 - 1858
Chester (Welsh wills): 1557 - 1858
Hawarden: 1554 - 1858
Llandaf: 1568 - 1857
St Asaph: 1565 - 1857
St David's: 1556 - 1858

New online tool will help connect history

The ‘Connected Histories’ project, which is a partnership between the Universities of Sheffield and Hertfordshire, the Institute of Historical Research, and King’s College London, will create an innovative search engine for a wide range of electronic resources relating to early modern and nineteenth century British history.

This period of British history has one of the largest collections of digital sources available on the web, including not only digitised books, but also newspapers, manuscripts, genealogical records, and even maps and images. These sources, created by both academic and commercial organisations, are accessed by hundreds of thousands of individuals every day, across the world. Until now, there has been no single starting place to search through these sources.

The website will be fully launched in 2011.

Artist's gift of veteran drawings

A Welsh artist who painted two of Britain's World War I veterans shortly before their deaths has gifted final drawings of the pair to the nation.

Dan Llywelyn Hall, 29, originally from Cardiff, painted Henry Allingham, who was then the world's oldest man just a few days before he passed away.

His portrait of Britain's last Tommy, Harry Patch, 111, was completed by the artist months earlier.

The preparatory drawings made during sittings with the veterans have been gifted to the Royal Collection and the National Museum Wales to preserve them for future generations.
